Surprise surprise! Fidel's brother, Raul Castro, is officially President of Cuba with the formal retirement of Fidel from that office. Fidel still heads the Communist Party of Cuba, but he's getting way too old to spit poison against the West and to shoot counter-revolutionaries (or at least stick them into labor camps).
I guess the commies finally figured out that the only way to preserve maniacal despotism is to pass it down to another family member. Where have we seen this before? North Korea, of course. Commies realized that the whole system becomes unstable if you don't pass the torch of mass-murder, slavery, torture and theft to someone you can trust.
Stalin didn't even trust his own relatives and often mocked them or had them go off to the front to die. But that was Stalin. I'm sure Pol Pot or Mao Zedong would have gone that route if they had trusted siblings or offspring.
Certainly I cannot bunch this "monarchy" together with a monarchy like the one the United Kingdom. That would be like bunching together a German Shepherd with a wild wolf.
